The Castle-Fortress was built in 1557, within the project of defense of the coasts of the Kingdom of Valencia, as protection and defense of the sailors and their families, against the attacks of pirates and corsairs, frequent fact in our coasts, especially in the XVI and XVII centuries. It cost 23,000 ducats, which were paid for by the Duke of Maqueda.
It is a stone building, with a square floor plan and two towers and two bastions in its corners, “the bastion of the king” and “the bastion of the duke”, typical of Renaissance military art. Inside the wall were the dwellings of the soldiers, open to the interior of the enclosure, where the Patio de Armas is located.
Currently, the Castle-Fortress Cultural Center houses the following facilities: Museum of the Sea, Municipal Exhibition Hall, Assembly Hall “Bastion of the Duke of Arcos” and the Chapel of the Virgin of Loreto.
Santa Pola is the closest point of the Peninsula to Tabarca, the only inhabited island of the Valencian Community belonging to the city of Alicante, located just 3 miles from the Cape. From the port of Santa Pola, boats depart throughout the year to the island, declared a national historic site in 1964.
Tabarca is a unique place that captures with its history, making us remember that it inspired artists and attracted pirates. In fact, to put an end to piracy, the island was fortified and populated by inhabitants of the island of Tabarqah (Tabarka) located in Tunisia. From this period (18th century) remain the walls, the gates of San Gabriel, San Miguel and San Rafael, the defensive tower of San José, the Governor’s House and the Church. At the eastern end of the island is the lighthouse, from the 19th century.
It is also a true marine paradise (recognized in 1986 as the first marine reserve in the country) with crystal clear waters and spectacular fauna and flora that will delight diving enthusiasts. The coastline is jagged, formed by small cliffs a few meters high, with pebble beaches and a single sandy beach with clear waters.
This 24,000 m2 park has more than 20 attractions that will delight the whole family: bouncy castles, three-storey American track, family baby carriages, bumper boat lake, jumping, pirate ship, arcade, quads, mini-golf, bowling park…
